How can you bend metal without welding or using fire?
For the sake of simplicity and clairity, let’s start with the most basic method. Picture a flat piece of metal that is 6″ wide, 4 ft long, and 1/8″ thick and what we want could loosely be described as “L” shaped, 4 ft long. A machine called a press brake will be used to make this. If you where standing in front of it, you would see 2 large vertical pieces of metal, one resting on the floor, then a gap you can see thru and the other piece directly above it. The lower part is stationary and the upper part moves up and down.
On the top of the lower piece is a “v” shaped piece of metal called a die. Hold your hand up in front of your and separate your thumb from your fingers in a “V” shape to get a real world look at what I’m describing.
On the bottom of the upper part that moves up and down is a rounded tip piece of metal with the point aiming at the “v” below. Take your other hand and aim your fingers down towards your other hand that is shaped like a “v”. The metal is placed on the “v” and the upper part (called a ram) moves down, pushing the metal into the “v”.
That is as simple of description of the most common way metal is formed. There are many other ways that metal is formed but for the most part they all use the same principle of the metal being forced between two dies.
