Tig Arc Gas
is arc welding downhill any good?
So I’m in welding class and I pretty much only do stick welding. I’ll do gas, mig, and tig in college but for now I’m just doin stick.
So in any case, our teacher teaches us never to weld downhill in arc welding because it will make a weak weld, but I’ve seen a few videos of experienced welders welding downhill on their cover pass.
So what I want to know is if welding downhill is alright on the cover pass of a 3g certification bend test (with a 7018 root pass and two 7018 weaves)?
& fyi I can easily pass the certification test visually and in the bend test, but i just want to learn to put cover passes on that look a little better.
Welding vertical down produces a lot less penetration, and a lot greater chance of slag inclusions and lack-of-fusion, since you’re traveling a lot faster. It takes more skill to do it right.
If you’re doing a weld test, you’ll have good fit-up, and a backing plate. I see no conceivable reason to weld downhill, especially on a test.
Use E6018 or E6015 rod for your root pass, those are more ductile-better impact toughness, hence less chance of root cracking.
For vertical welding, use 1/8″ or smaller size electrodes. Set the voltage and/or amperage according to what it says on the box, don’t “guess.” or “play around” with the settings. Look up the *correct* setting then go with it every time.
If you don’t like your bead’s appearance, keep practicing, It’ll make you a better weldor. Key is using consistent rhythm. Use the same motion all the way from start to finish. The weld inspector doesn’t necessarily care if it’s pretty, he’s looking for defects like undercut and porosity and poor fusion and such.
